How to finish this dreadful year well
Botswana.
Stay at: Tongabezi Lodge.

Construct an energy-efficient stove for a rural Mayan family. These stoves are fantastic because:
2020 has been almost universally challenging for us all, and now we are coming into the holiday season, traditionally a time of caring for those who are having it even tougher than us. I think this is even more important this year, especially for those in the developing world who, in addition to COVID-19, face complete loss of their already meagre income, and so many of whom are reliant on tourism and ancillary businesses.
There is a debate about whether it is ethical to travel right now, and I argue that it is. Unless you are at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 (you are elderly, or have a compromised immune system, for example) or are infected, your travel dollars and pounds are urgently needed, as is your hands-on help.
Here are my top recommendations for where you can make this holiday season count:
Zambia
Build a house for a widow and her children in a village near Victoria Falls, who are now battling Covid in addition to HIV. Get immersed in village life and combine this with the splendour of Victoria Falls, white-water rafting, kayaking and ‘Big 5’ safari in South Luangwa National Park, or neighbouring - they replace open flames, so burns are reduced;
- they have a chimney to expel the smoke, so respiratory problems such as asthma are greatly lowered;
- they are much more efficient, so are better for the environment.

A colourful reminder that there is a world out there. Also a reminder that there are many people in that world who are in need of a helping hand. They will still need help when Covid – 19 is defeated and we’ve forgotten about the relatively minor inconvenience of lockdown.
Yes indeed, and sadly, help is even more needed as a result of Covid and its far-reaching consequences.
If you are going to Morocco I would do Fes. Not Marrakech. Too many mopeds in Marrakech racing through the lanes. Dangerous.
Fes is authentic. People live and work there. Far quieter and fewer tourists too. It’s a beautiful place. No mopeds either.
Thanks Jack.
Yes, Fes is authentic, and the tanneries are much more evocative than in Marrakech.
I’m reminded of the many other things we can do in our own “backyards” that are very similar to the ones on this list. For those that cannot travel due to the reasons stated by the author, we can still help by traveling locally, within our own borders. I myself want to fly out and experience the world again, but I am still very wary. In the meantime, I am finding inspiration from posts like this to travel in the new normal.
Yes, you make an excellent point that it is possible to “be the change” and make a difference in your own backyard.
Thanks!
I had no idea that there were all these countries you could visit still. Is it wise to visit just yet or wouldn’t we better until there’s a more significant roll-out of the vaccines? I wasn’t really thinking of considering international travel until 2022 myself.
Hi Jimmy,
The decision really is yours. I feel that if you are fit and healthy, and travel with a company that is taking the right sanitary precautions, you can travel now, but each person has their own criteria and risk assessment.
