Some of these buildings are very substantial and massive. It’s quite a shock really as I’d always thought of the Spanish conquistadores passing through onto their next ransack and robbery.

When you see the scale of these buildings you realise that they were putting down roots and were here for the long term.

In reply to David Carruthers. The time to be perturbed is when you don’t get armed guards. Staying in a Delhi hotel I was disappointed to see that the suite next to mine had an armed guard in a magnificent red tunic, armed with an antique but immaculately polished rifle, whilst I had nothing,

I hope that the Church of La Compañía isn’t too grand.

When I visited the Church of the Knights of Dt John in Valletta it was so OTT that I suffered from sensory overload. All the gold and glitter was so overwhelming that I felt physically sick and dizzy and had to get some fresh air.

My tactic getting for getting to know Quito would be to find myself a seat in Plaza Grande, ideally with a cup of coffee or a beer and watch the world go by.

Sit and relax for a leisurely hour or two and you learn so much about a city’s people and their daily life.

I have recently had clients visit Quito at the beginning of a Silversea Galapagos cruise. Sadly only one night, so they didn’t have enough time to explore all of these attractions, although they did get caught on a demonstration which they found to be “quite exciting”. They are well travelled and weren’t perturbed by armed guards at the JW Marriott hotel they stayed in.

I’ve got mixed feelings about the IQON tower. Usually, I’m all for architects experimenting, after all we should be driving architecture forward, developing new sustainable materials and techniques that simply do a better job. But is Quito, sitting alongside some classic architecture, the place to do that experimenting?
