  1. What a great selection BA have come up with here! And, although I’d consider myself reasonably well travelled, I have only actually been to 5 of the 19 in the list, so there’s plenty here to whet my appetite for further travel!

  2. Would like to explore more of Japan as I’ve only ever been to Tokyo. Osaka looks to be a good location as it’s handy for visiting Kyoto, as well as the ancient burial mounds at Sakei which I think they were trying to get UNESCO World Heritage recognition for. Kobe (where kobe beef comes from) is also nearby and meant to be quite pretty, I think. I don’t know if there are any places that you can visit that relate to the cattle industry there, but I would be interested to see them if there are. Food in Japan really interests me.

    1. I think to be recognised as Kobe beef it has to be reared in the Hyōgo prefecture which extends mostly to the north of Kobe (the prefecture’s capital) so, if it is possible to visit anywhere (and I don’t know if you can – maybe someone else here can enlighten us), then I guess it could lie anywhere within this area of more than 8,000 sq km. It’s possible that they don’t admit the public anywhere as they won’t want the cattle to be unduly stressed. If you believe the hype, we’re talking about livestock that never has to venture far for pasture, is reputedly fed on beer and listens to classical music, and in some cases gets regular massages. Whether any of that is true is up for debate, but it perhaps suggests they won’t just let any Tom, Dick or Harry show up, for fear of undue stress on the cattle.

  3. Good to see Sofia in here amongst the perennial big-hitters of the travel industry. These lists are great at widening our horizons. Although Sofia has a rich mix of Roman and Ottoman architecture at its heart – and it’s own distinctive cuisine – it is a city badly in need of an influx of tourist bucks and some restoration. BA should follow-up with another list of “up and coming destinations”. There are many other cities, not just in Eastern Europe, that would benefit from some attention. It’s time to spread the load, get some footfall through some of the world’s quieter byways.

  4. Oh my, these are all excellent destinations! It’s so hard to choose. Though I’m finding Marrakech really exotic and interesting. I would also love to see Salzburg because I’m a major The Sound of Music fan. I can retrace Maria’s steps! It’s great that British Airways Holidays makes it easy for people to plan and book their trips.

  5. Barbados is my pick out of this lot. Such a relaxing place to be. I could easily pass on Vegas (although must admit, I would love to one day see the Grand Canyon).

  6. I’m a big fan of Barbados, I’ve been lucky enough to manage a lot of cricket tours to this piece of Paradise. But it is a lot busier than it was, there are even traffic jams. A lot of travellers, me included, are beginning to explore the other islands looking for what Barbados was thirty years ago. Antigua with its 365 beaches gets a big shout and Tobago has a leisurely pace of life. Though once you are in the grounds of your all-inclusive Barbados Hotel the service is world-class.

  7. I’m surprised Muscat hasn’t crept in to this list not even as number 20. Muscat airport’s expanded and much improved. It’s learnt about tourism from Dubai and Oman’s capital is low-rise and clean. Locals get fined if they don’t wash their car. It’s got miles of empty beaches, plenty of luxurious hotels and the Sultan subsidises tickets at the Opera House. Any other Muscat fans out there??

  8. Last summer i visiеed Dubai and i still under impression. Very expensive city, but if u want to see really progress in city organization- u are welcome
