Interview with Lucy Fox, PR leader at RMG PR & Events

Lucy Fox is a travel and lifestyle PR working for luxury agency RMG PR & Events. She started her career running a first class travel business and has worked alongside many industry figureheads. As joint founder of Fox Rendall International, she was awarded the worldwide Hyatt Hotels account responsible for managing the UK press function. Under her tenure Lucy handled the launch promotion for Park Hyatt Paris, Park Hyatt Milan, Park Hyatt Washington, Park Hyatt Goa, Park Hyatt Moscow and Grand Hyatt Tokyo. Lucy is extremely well connected in London society with a working knowledge of the media, lifestyle, film, theatre and television industries. Lucy is from the Fox acting dynasty, father is Edward Fox and her sister is Emilia. She is the wife of The Viscount Gormanston. What is it that you do exactly?

The world of PR is diverse so my day could involve making calls to press to tell them about our clients, organising press trips to our various hotel clients and then suddenly you have to change into something smart and host a product launch so it’s far from boring.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I think that has to be the people you meet along the way, I find people fascinating and am genuinely interested by what makes them tick.  The travel element brings huge enjoyment, new places and cultures and of course new people.

What would you say are the 3 best places you’ve ever stayed?

Villa Gella Recently I have been to the beautiful Villa Gella in the Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria which was a revelation.  Bulgaria is a fascinating country with a history dating back to 40th century BC.  Villa Gella is the most perfect place to unwind with very comfortable rooms, delicious food and the local wine is fantastic.  The villa is family owned so you get a lovely feeling of belonging. The Es Saadi Another family owned property I love is The Es Saadi in Marrakech, this is a stunning property in the heart of the city but surrounded by 22 acres of garden, it truly is an oasis.  It is home to the oldest casino in North Africa and has a fantastic spa with a traditional Hammam and the largest pool in the city so a great way to have the best of all worlds in this fascinating destination. The hotel arranged for us to have a hot air balloon ride over the mountains which is an experience not to be missed. Villa Machiavelli One of our clients is My Private Villas and I was lucky enough to be invited to stay at Villa Machiavelli in Tuscany, which was home to the great man himself.  The villa is stunning and they also own Mangiacane Wines whose vineyards surround the property.

What’s been your most memorable dining experience to date?

London is now home to such an amazing variety of food which does make one proud of what we have achieved, considering that it wasn’t that long ago that British food was thought to be right up there with the most revolting!  I was asked to lunch at Munch Food Company, a new catering company based in Battersea started by Keith Goddard in 2011, who has worked in Michelin-starred kitchens.  Their new dining room opens onto the kitchen and is a really lovely way to entertain in a sophisticated but relaxed way.  My young cousin, Cristobel Reed, has just finished training as a yoga teacher and she hosted a yoga evening at KPH in Ladbroke Grove with the executive chef, Matthew Horton.  The yoga was perfect and Matthew’s vegan food a revelation, I freaked out for his Freekeh! I want him to write a book and for them both to do more evenings like that.

Have you rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous, either through your work or your travels?

A few years ago I was working on the Hyatt account and we were staying at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo.  Company policy is never to reveal who may be staying at the hotels so I was rather amused when going up in the lift one of our journalists asked the in-house PR whether Steven Spielberg was staying at the hotel.  She said ‘I honestly don’t know, I don’t think so’ when a voice from the back of the lift piped up ‘Yes, I am staying here’ – it was indeed the great director.

What currently ranks highest on your travel wish list?

I really want to revisit Istanbul which is a city I adore. Argentina is on the of my list, a great girlfriend of mine went off for months to learn the tango, she came back with amazing stories and an even more amazing body!  I would love to have a GoPro camera as I am the world’s worst photographer this, I am assured, would make even me into Mario Testino.
