Majete Wildlife Reserve is Malawi’s major ‘Big Five’ reserve and one of its top wildlife destinations. Located in south-western Malawi, approximately 40 miles from Blantyre and three hours from Lake Malawi, Majete is one of the big success stories in African conservation.
A decade ago, heading to Malawi for a safari wouldn’t have crossed most people’s minds. But in recent years this small, landlocked country has undergone an exciting wildlife revival, with some incredible conservation projects and animal reintroductions.
There are few countries in Africa that can compete with Botswana for safari exclusivity and luxury, as well as abundant wildlife and diverse landscapes. With a population of roughly 2 million, the country is slightly larger than France and slightly smaller than Texas, yet 40% of its land is dedicated to parks and wildlife.
The sun sank low in the sky, and from our chairs around the fire we listened to the sounds of the desert. The eerie calls of jackals filled the air, and the night sky echoed with their yips and howls. One by one stars appeared in the sky overhead, and the jackals became quiet.
