The 6 best luxury spa destinations around the world (+ tips!)
Tired of the hustle and bustle of your daily life? The perfect solution might just be a spa retreat in a gorgeous, faraway place! From the beautiful beaches of the Seychelles archipelago to the serene mountains of the Swiss Alps, no matter your vibe we’ve got you covered. So without further ado, here are six spots from around the world that offer everything you could ever want in a luxury spa experience.
1. Seychelles
In the Indian Ocean lies an island that’s nothing short of magnificent. The Seychelles is a stunning little archipelago, teeming with many island resorts for people seeking luxury and privacy. That’s exactly why it’s a top pick if you’re searching for an exclusive and quiet spa retreat. And of course, the pristine coastlines and turquoise waters don’t hurt either.
But it’s not just nice to look at….the Seychelles is well-known for its holistic approach to wellness. You can expect ocean therapy (also known as thalassotherapy) and wellness rituals based on local Creole traditions. That’s why it goes without saying that the Seychelles offers you a truly unique spa experience. Plus, it’s set in paradise! So, whether it’s lounging on secluded beaches or exploring lush rainforests, Seychelles promises you an unforgettable escape that’s both peaceful and luxurious.
2. Kyoto, Japan
Japan’s ancient capital, Kyoto is the epitome of tranquillity. Just picture: traditional wooden temples, maintained gardens, and minimalistic tea houses. As far as spa experiences go, you can enjoy both ancient and luxurious spa treatments. Perhaps best of all – you can visit a local hot spring (or onsen) for a therapeutic bathing experience that dates back literal centuries.
But Kyoto isn’t just hot springs and tea! You can also participate in Zen meditation sessions and enjoy painful – but liberating – shiatsu massages. So you see, Kyoto blends ancient traditions and modern comforts in a way that every spa-goer will love. Whether you’re exploring historic temples or unwinding in an onsen, this luxury spa experience will have you de-stressed in no time!
3. Bali, Indonesia
Indonesia is perhaps best known for Bali. Also known as the Island of the Gods, Bali captivates visitors with its lush landscapes, ancient temples, and a thriving art scene. From the bustling streets of Ubud, to the tranquil shores of Nusa Dua, Bali offers a range of luxury spa experiences for wellness seekers of every kind. Up for a Balinese massage?
Balinese spas are known for their holistic healing approaches. For instance, many offer traditional massages incorporating local herbs and oils which are believed to have ancient medicinal properties. And of course, let’s not forget Balinese massage – which combines gentle stretches, reflexology, and aromatherapy to boost blood flow, oxygen, and energy. It promotes wellbeing, calm, and deep relaxation. Just picture yourself doing yoga overlooking terraced rice paddies, indulging in organic meals sourced from local farms, and relaxing on sun-kissed beaches surrounded by crystal waters.

4. Tuscany, Italy
Apart from being the setting for many a romance movie, Tuscany is also synonymous with breathtaking landscapes of rolling hills dotted with quaint vineyards. It’s also home to thermal spas, which have drawn visitors since the time of ancient Romans. When in Rome, right? Well, these luxurious spas offer treatments that involve natural hot springs, which are rich in minerals. And there’s no doubt Tuscany will enchant you with its rich cultural heritage too.
If you’re looking for art and Renaissance treasures, you can visit historic cities like Florence and Siena. Why not explore medieval architecture or visit some local markets and pick up some fresh ingredients so you can dine at home like a local? At the end of the day, whether you’re savouring a glass of Chianti as the sun sets, or indulging in a Tuscan massage, this slice of paradise promises you a luxury spa retreat complete with oodles of relaxation, cultural discovery, and culinary delights.
5. Swiss Alps, Switzerland
When you think of majestic mountain peaks, crystalline lakes, and picturesque valleys, the Swiss Alps is probably one of the first places that springs to mind. Welcoming visitors year-round, Alpine spas in Switzerland specialise in treatments that harness the healing properties of local herbs and minerals – such as arnica and edelweiss, known for their anti-inflammatory and revitalising effects. It sounds rejuvenating just thinking about it!
You can unwind in steamy thermal baths while taking in panoramic views of snow-capped peaks or indulge in hot stone massages that promote deep relaxation. Beyond luxury spa experiences, you can also enjoy scenic hiking trails and fresh mountain air, pristine ski slopes, charming villages, and amazing chocolate! When are we going?
6. Santorini, Greece
Santorini has an undeniably postcard-perfect setting. With its cliffside villages and the deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea. It’s no surprise that this little Grecian paradise has luxury spas that draw inspiration from its natural surroundings. Offering thalassotherapy (that’s ocean therapy) treatments using mineral-rich seawater to detoxify and rejuvenate the skin.
You can also indulge in luxurious volcanic mud treatments that use Santorini’s volcanic ash. Santorini invites visitors to explore its ancient archaeological sites, sample local wines produced from indigenous grapes, and simply unwind while soaking in panoramic views of the city awash in hues of gold and pink. Fun fact: this is one of the best places in the world to watch the sunset! Don’t believe us? See for yourself.

Utterly agree with the advice to read the reviews. One spa’s relaxing massage might not be too different to another spa’s agonising deep tissue massage.
Kyoto would be my choice. Japan is Number One on my travel list.
To be honest spa standards are now so high that I’ve almost always had brilliant spa experiences wherever I’ve travelled in the world. Though it is nice to get spas with a local ingredient and organic theme who put a distance between themselves and the global big brands.
After the week I’ve had I would take any of these to unwind.
These are really exciting places to visit will have to spend a vacation in one them, thanks for sharing.
Is there any research on the benefits of spa treatments for your well-being?
My partner has some treatments whenever we go away and looks so much better for it. Then when we get home she forgets all about the spa and works 11 hour days and all the benefits of the break are lost.
There’s a lavish book in this one. I can imagine a glossy oversize book adorning coffee tables – The World’s 100 Best Spas.
