Oman gets my vote. I’m a real serial tourist to this beautiful country. The Sultan had such foresight to put in an amazing road structure. Once you get out of the capital Muscat’s congestion you can make very good progress, very quickly. I usually hire a car and driver for the day so that I can sit back and enjoy the stunning scenery.
Not only do we need more posts like this we also need more people to read them and take notice.
Too many places in the world have become over run by tourists and selfie st ks.
Meanwhile other places are desperate for a share of the world tourism cake.
Nice post, it’s given me some new ideas for trips.
Antarctica is NOT a place desperate for a share of the world’s tourism cake. It’s a place with an incredibly fragile ecosystem that tourism will utterly destroy, and quickly.
Hi Jack and Anita,
SO happy to hear you both enjoyed the destinations here.
Underrated places definitely need to be given more chances. . . With Europe being so packed this year, maybe people will consider heading to these lesser-known spots.
Antarctica, The White Continent, is really on the up, trending a lot on A Luxury Travel Blog lately. There have been some really tempting posts on Antarctic cruises.
Hi Chris,
I’ve seen some of those posts – and I have to agree, a cruise around Antarctica seems to be the best way to experience this incredible place. :)
Last year, when I was in South Africa, I met a guy, who worked as a guide in Rwanda and Uganda. Hearing his stories about expeditions to see the gorillas was mesmerising. I’ve now got a real bug to do one of those gorilla safaris.
That’s amazing, Tom!
It really does sound like an incredible experience. Time to book my safari too. :)
When I was a young lass Papua New Guinea seemed at the ends of the Earth and probably would have taken days to get there. Hard to believe that it’s now a realistic travel destination. I’m tempted.
Hi Jean,
So cool to think of it that way.
Incredible how times have changed so much and allowed us to reach faraway places we only could’ve ever dreamed of seeing in real life!
In the middle of a cost of living crisis, with interest rates still on the up, I thing that as I’m in the UK, almost all of these are going to prove too expensive at the moment. I’d be shelling out a lot on flights. At the moment the only one that could be affordable is The Azores and I’ve already been there!
Hi Kate,
Forget luxury travel – travel, in general, is expensive, and it takes a lot of patience, skill, and effort to travel affordably these days!
Hopefully a new adventure comes your way soon.
Interesting that you mention Namibia. I saw some images of the so called Skeleton Coast, that’s Namibia isn’t it? Although the shipwrecks showed the power of nature in a frightening way they were also awesome too.
I’ve done a lot of African countries now, all very different in their own ways, but I get the impression that Namibia flies under the radar a bit. It could be time that I researched the country, it could make for a very different travel adventure.
Some friends who are very enthusiastic gardeners visited the Azores last year and were very impressed. They loved the diversity of plants and trees as well as being very well looked after by their chosen hotels. They also had excellent weather.
Hi Janet,
Thank you so much for this!
It sounds like it was an incredible time. :)
An interesting selection of the 8 destinations redefining luxury travel. The big question is which destinations are bubbling under theses. Where will be the places trending in 2024? And beyond?
Good question, Cindy! :)
Can’t wait to see which spots become the next rising stars as the year comes to a close and 2024 arrives.
Finally, my flights are booked to fly to Sri Lanka in October and I am really looking forward to it. I’ve wanted to there ever since I saw a Duran Duran video filmed there!!!
But what with the war, terrorism and fitting around the monsoon season there have been a lot of obstacles to overcome. I can’t wait to get on that plane.
We all love a good list, probably because it sparks off so much controversy and discussion. I would have thought Costs Rica might have been in there but I may be behind the times, perhaps it’s already had its moment in the limelight.
I’ve just come back to take another look at that Bhutan picture. Not sure if it is actually offering accommodation but it would be an amazing place to stay even if it must be a real physical challenge to get there. Worth it for all those views once you arrive.
