Exploring the best Winter luxury yacht charter destinations
Looking ahead to a winter break in the sunshine is for some the only way to cope with the thought of a blustery autumn and chilly winter. If you are someone who needs a dose of vitamin D come winter, relishes the idea of carefree luxury travel and has never considered a yacht charter vacation, then read on for inspiration and expert advice.
Planning your yacht charter vacation in advance allows plenty of time to consider all the options and gives you the best choice of yachts, with the best crew in premier destinations. Working with an experienced charter broker from the outset will give you peace of mind to navigate the fantastic choices and create your perfect holiday.
The Caribbean
There is a reason the Caribbean has long been a favourite amongst experienced charterers and a great place to start for those new to yachting. The clear blue sea, white sandy beaches with shallow water and fleets of beautifully maintained luxury yachts see visitors return year after year. There are over 700 islands in two distinct areas: the Greater Antilles including countries like the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Cuba; and the Lesser Antilles where the Windward and Leeward Island groups major. The Leeward Islands include St Barts, the British and US Virgin Islands and Antigua, while the Windwards comprise islands such as Grenadines,
Barbados and St Lucia.
The region is steeped in sailing history ever since the days of galleons and pirates and still offers some of the most fertile waters in the world. As well as the amazing diving and snorkelling on the teeming coral reefs, the Caribbean is home to lush tropical rain forests, exotic bird life plus fine dining, authentic local cuisine and a thriving nightlife culture.
If you are a committed sailor, there are also a number of renowned events throughout the year which attract competition from some of the most highly innovative sailing vessels, including some which can be chartered. These include the Antigua Sailing Week, St Bart’s Bucket and the Grenada Sailing Festival.
The Bahamas
In the northern waters of the Caribbean, not far from the coast of south Florida, the Bahamas are a cluster of small islands which form an integral part of many charter itineraries in the winter season. The stunning archipelago of islands and coral cays includes the bustling capital of Nassau which serves as a vibrant gateway for a yachting adventure. The colourful colonial architecture, markets and blend of cultures sit alongside lively urban attractions including upscale restaurants, shops and casinos.
A charter in the Bahamas will no doubt include a visit to the Exumas, a stunning chain of islands which provide the perfect backdrop for snorkelling, diving and fishing – activities which are a must on every yacht charter. The area is home to the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, a protected marine reserve, the world-famous Pig Beach where visitors can swim with the friendly pigs and Thunderball Grotto, an underwater cave system features in Bond movies.
Mexico
The ancient Mayan and Aztec civilisations characterise Mexico’s history, but the Spanish and American cultures play a part in creating a country of great diversity. A yacht charter vacation along the coastline of Mexico offers something for everyone, whether you want to lie back in the sun next to the crystal-clear waters and beautiful beaches, explore the incredible and unique Mayan ruins or party in some of the world’s most hedonistic resorts.
The fantastic climate makes Mexico a great year-round yacht charter destination, but the most pleasant conditions are from October to May, when it isn’t so hot and humid, and the Gulf Stream winds are at their most favourable. The largest country in Central America boasts coastlines in the Pacific and Caribbean, so itineraries can vary greatly. On the Pacific coast, the Mexican Riviera includes vibrant Acapulco, Baja California and the colourful Sea of Cortez. Wildlife thrives here and you could expect to see sea lions, whale sharks, sea turtles and even blue whales. The Caribbean region is dominated by the beautiful Yucatan Peninsula where the premier resort of Cancun is a great starting point for a charter before enjoying Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and an adventure inland to visit the mighty Mayan site of Chichén Itzá.

You can spot turtles and rays gliding through the seagrass meadows and colourful fish diving between the coral before your yacht takes you further out to the incredible fishing, diving and snorkelling paradise of Half Moon Caye where coconut palm trees poke through soft white sand and turtles come onto the beach to nest.

A winter yacht charter over Christmas and New Year is an experience like no other, where you and your family and friends can enjoy long, lazy days in the sun with a dedicated and professional crew to take care of your every need. The chef will prepare Christmas Dinner, and all the meals on board, to your own preference while the stewardess team create beautiful table settings, ensure the yacht looks pristine and keep the drinks flowing. The kids will love the chance to try out the water toys under the supervision of the deck crew and the captain will know the best places to visit and keep you all safe on board. Although the crew are there to facilitate the holiday of a lifetime, children remain the responsibility of parents or nannies.
Depending on the days Christmas and New Year fall each year, it can be possible to celebrate both, on board a 10-night charter or just one by choosing a 7-night vacation. Each yacht owner will have a preference and your charter broker will work with the yacht managers to find the perfect option for you.

I’d almost forgotten that winter is on its way. I’m convinced that I suffer from SAD and I’m always looking for an escape for some sunshine.
Some very tempting destinations here. Personally I’d go for the Bahamas.
Love that photo of the bird hitching a lift on the back of the swimming pig. How long did it take to capture that one?
It’s always going to be hard to beat the Caribbean. Though as you show there’s huge diversity between the different parts of the Caribbean.
My tip for the Caribbean is stay away from the big tourist magnets – like Antigua, Barbados and Jamaica. In my experience you’ll get a warmer welcome in the less visited islands.
