And the world’s best airline in 2023 is…
Singapore Airlines (SIA) has been named World’s Best Airline in the 2023 Skytrax World Airline Awards, the fifth time it has won this prestigious accolade.
SIA took the top spot in four categories at this year’s Skytrax awards, including Best First Class Airline, Best First Class Comfort Amenities, and Best Airline in Asia. SIA’s low-cost subsidiary Scoot was named Best Long Haul Low-cost Airline, and ranked second in the World’s Best Low-cost Airlines category.
The Skytrax awards are based on surveys of more than 20 million travellers across over 100 nationalities, who rated more than 325 airlines between September 2022 and May 2023.
Mr Goh Choon Phong, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Airlines, received the World’s Best Airline award on behalf of the Airline in Paris on 20 June 2023.
“This award is a testament to the indomitable spirit of our people, who worked tirelessly and made many sacrifices to ensure that SIA was ready for the recovery in air travel. That has allowed us to emerge stronger and fitter from the pandemic as a leading international airline,” said Mr Goh.

I fly a lot and have never been asks for my opinion by Skytrax!
Though I do agree with the choice of Singapore.
Never even heard of Scoot. Next time I head to Asia I’ll be looking out for Scoot flights.
Certainly no time for airlines to rest on their laurels with all these league tables and titles around. You can’t beat a bit of healthy competition.
Personally, I would have gone for Qatar myself. But who am I to argue with 100m respondents?
When you get airlines swapping positions on rankings like this you have to question how much difference there is between them?
Does it take just a few little tweaks and some carefully targeted training for one airline to leap up by a few places?
As somewhere who works in the airline industry I can tell you that these awards are very important to us. You could say that they are the Oscars of our industry. When it’s getting close to the announcement of the awards there’s some nervous excitement around. We all like some recognition of our efforts.
I remember flying by Scoot from Bali to Kuala Lumpur a few years back, and by no means it looked like a budget airline. My experience was really good. Budget airlines can be a pain (not naming any airline here)
It’s often worth taking a look at the placings before booking a flight. Turkish Air came up with a really good price on one of my searches and it was reassuring to see how highly people rated them. I had a similar experience with EVA a couple of years ago and have been more than happy to fly with them ever since.
It would be fascinating to know what the criteria are for each category. What questions do Skytrax ask? Maybe one day we could have another post about how these awards are decided, it would make for a very interesting read.
I can almost hear the pause and the prolonged drum roll after those words … And the world’s best airline in 2023 is ….
There’s always such a sense of drama at these award ceremonies. Prolonging the wait for the announcement, even by a few seconds, must be agony for all the staff who’ve worked so hard to get the title for their company.
